Live Blogging: VP debate

Blogs:
Michelle Malkin:

She was warm, fresh, funny, confident, energetic, personable, relentless, and on message. She roasted Obama’s flip-flops on the surge and tea-with-dictators declarations, dinged Biden’s bash-Bush rhetoric, challenged the blame-America defeatism of the Left, and exuded the sunny optimism that energized the base in the first place.

She definitely exceeded my expectations. And my expectations were high. Besides holding her own, stating the positions clearly and effectively, and connecting, I thought she had Biden on the run by the end of it.

They already started spinning the debate. The phony journalists, propaganda pundits on major networks and minor cable news shows are hoping you did not watch the debate so you will believe whatever they say about it.

And there are plenty of people out there who will tune in “to see how the debate went” and regurgitate the talking points the next morning over coffee.

Stop the ACLU

She was confident, and totally blew the lid off the frame the media tried to put around her neck. She connected with the American people, and folks felt her energy was refreshing

So true. The left and cohorts at the MSM were very short sighted. They basically lowered the bar with their Couric interview narrative that Palin would have only needed to make it through the debate - instead she did extremely and turned in a strong performance. I’m guessing, with the exception of the kool-aid left, any fallout from the Couric interviews has been at least neutralized.

The Daily Kos still can’t stop obsessing over Kathleen Parker.

Post debate Media coverage:

Brit Hume: Spirited but not hostile.

Frank Luntz focus group is calling Palin the winner and saying her performance was great. Luntz also predicts a shift in polling.

Speaking of focus groups…. Watching Solodad Obrian’s focus group comments later on Tivo - what a difference between two “neutral” groups….

The debate:

10:34

Strong finish for both.

10:19

As the debate wraps up, she’s become more at ease, he’s getting wound up tighter and tighter.

10:12

LOL. “Say it ain’t so Joe.”

10:05

She’s pretty impressive, and performing at least as well as I figured she would. She’s even had Biden on the defensive more than he’d like.

9:48

Not noo-kyuh-luhr, its noo-clee-ar Governor. We’ll hear about that one. Ad nauseum. Hopefully for the next 4 years at least.

9:44

Zing #2. Biden thinks he can laugh it off… and change the subject.

9:42

I thought Obama was trying to distance himself from the timeline

9:40

Zing. There’s another reference to something Biden said about Obama during the primaries.

9:32

Biden: “I think (global warming) is totally man made.” He’s gonna pay for that one big time. Gaffe.

9:26

For crying out loud, he played the “windfall taxes” card. Tedious.

9:22

Biden got a pretty good jab in with the “bridge to nowhere” thing

9:17

She did it! She brought up the Biden patriotic tax hike gaffe.

9:14 EST

Palin: “I want to correct you again…”

So far, so good. Palin is either nervous or highly caffeinated, but it isn’t too noticeable, and she’s getting her answers out and even going on offense.

9:03

Palin: Can I call you Joe? During the handshake.

2:53PM HST - 8:53 EST

Whatever Palin does, it’ll be criticized. If she is outgoing and bubbly as she was during the convention, they’ll say she’s pulling out her old standby. If she is by the numbers and serious, they’ll say she’s tried to remake herself and she’s too rehersed.

The ‘Can I call you Joe?’ thing was very shrewd on her part. If you have noticed, both Obama and Biden have stopped calling McCain ‘Senator’ and now only call him ‘John’. EXTREMELY disrespectful, IMO. McCain always calls them by their titles.

She knows that you don’t call someone you’ve just met by their first name until given permission.

My take on it was that she was making a little joke/jab knowing it would get picked up on. She, of course, was perfectly respectful during the debate while being tough.

Obama was trying to show that he’s on equal footing and narrow the gap. Obviously there’s a huge chasm not only just in age but in experience and Obama made a futile failed effort to artificially close it.

As part of my English major, I took several rhetoric classes, mostly in preparation for law school. I love studying why someone says/does what they say/do and when they do it. It’s fascinating, and once I started examining these things, I have never looked at politics the same way again.

Nice job with live blogging, btw!

I think by her ASKING “do you mind if I call you Joe?” was and is respectful. In my opinion, at least she asked and just didn’t come flying out with his first name beforehand.
